The Stigma that Stops Veterans from Getting Help for PTSD (video)

What discourages veterans from seeking treatment for post-traumatic stress? As part of our series War on the Brain, special correspondent Soledad O'Brien talks to former service members who have struggled to accept the diagnosis and get help.

When talking about PTS, retired Army Col. Greg Gadson chooses not to include the letter D. “Well, the D to me is — it’s a negative label that doesn’t need to be attached... We all have some level of post-traumatic stress. Does it make us dysfunctional? For most of us, I would say not.”

Also, a panel of veterans experiencing PTSD reflect on the increased public acceptance of PTSD when you have visible wounds, the internal and external pressure of being an officer, the military culture of not wanting to look weak or appear undependable, and the double stigma of being a woman in the military who is suffering from PTSD.
